Three People Stuck in their Pasts

So far in ‘ Song of Solomon’ Milkman, Ruth, and Macon have been very stagnant and stuck in their pasts. Despite the book moving through time periods so quickly these characters are never seen truly looking forward instead of back.  First we have Ruth (Foster) Dead who is ‘starved for love’ as Pilate puts it. In the beginning of her life she sticks uncomfortably close to her father, feeling like an outcast to the rest of the children due to her social status. She then craves that same love and adoration from her husband and son which she is denied. Throughout the portion of the novel we have read so far Ruth has been craving a feeling of love, comfort, and belonging. That same feeling her father had given to her in her past but she hasn’t been able to find it again since her father had passed. Ruth has stayed stuck in the past chasing and craving something that is and has been gone for a long time. Then we have Macon Dead II. From a young age Macon had been driven by money. When he...

The Jes Grew Rebellion

Well, we’re done with Mumbo Jumbo , it was ….interesting. I wasn't even entirely sure where to start with this blog post , there are so many things to dissect when it comes to Mumbo Jumbo but in the end I decided to take a closer look at the symbolism behind Jes Grew. At its heart Jes Grew seems to represent a rebellion against the oppressive forces of mainstream white culture. In this novel these oppressive forces are depicted as the Atonists and the Wallflower Order, groups that seek to suppress all forms of cultural expression deemed dangerous ( a decision made by themselves of course). Jes Grew is in direct opposition to these groups as it disrupts social norms through its infectious energy and liberating influence. The term Jes Grew itself is a play on words, it is reflective of the nature of an anti-plague. The name suggests that the phenomenon is natural, spontaneous, and uncontrollable, like a plant that grows. Similar to the proliferation of ideas and cultural practices w...

Why is Peter Walsh so critical of Clarissa Dalloway

Why is Peter Walsh so critical of Clarissa Dalloway? Throughout Mrs. Dalloway we hear from multiple characters like Peter, Sally, and even Clarissa that they don't think Clarissa should’ve married Richard. Sally and Peter express that they feel as if Richard was bad for Clarissa. But what exactly was wrong with him? Nothing. Many of the characters in Mrs. Dalloway seemed to actually like Richard as an individual character, they seemed to even have fond memories of him. He was described as an all around nice, clean cut, and decent dude.  It seems like the main reason the characters were so dissatisfied with Clarissa's marriage to Richard was not because Richard was a bad guy but because he was a boring guy. Peter described Clarissa as radical, thought provoking, and inspiring in her youth. Peter makes Clarissa sound like a woman who looked to solve the deeper problems in life and dive into issues that plagued more than the upper crusts of society. Now that she's married to...
